Startling statistics desperately demand more research

The Bare Bones
UNHEALTHY BONE

Startling statistics about bone fractures.

  • Premature Death - 25-30% of people die within a year of a hip fracture
  • Disability - More than 50% of people experience disability after a fracture
  • Subsequent Fractures - 30-40% of people have another fracture within 5 years after an initial fracture

Why is it critical to study poor bone health, and to do something about it?

  • Over two-thirds (66%) of Australians over 50 have poor bone health including osteoporosis or osteopenia.
  • It is the fastest rising chronic disease in Australia.

What is research aiming to achieve?

  • Identify those who will benefit most from the treatment for unhealthy bones and to individualise treatments with the many options currently available.
  • Increase the number of people who get the treatment they need to improve their poor bone health.
  • At a scientific level, understand the mechanisms of why a fracture causes people to die prematurely of diseases unrelated to the fracture. What is the relationship between a fracture and other diseases like cancer, heart, disease, diabetes etc? What acts as a trigger to cause these premature deaths?

Many people think that their bones are just like timbers or steel which supports the structure of a house. They are not. Bones absolutely support us, but bones are an ever-changing, living and dynamic organ. More below.
